Are you responsible for protecting a church, synagogue or school in the Dallas – Fort Worth area? Starmor offers church security systems designed to protect congregations from outside threats.
Did you know that on October 5th, 2025, outside St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington D.C. police discovered a man outside the church carrying more than 200 homemade explosives. He threatened to set off the bombs, citing his hatred of the Catholic Church. Luckily police were able to respond in time to prevent a tragedy – the man was arrested before he could set off any of the explosives. And this wasn’t the only incident of church violence. In the past month alone, the following occurred:
- There was a bomb scare at the Andrew Greek Orthodox Church in Kendall, Florida on September 28th.
- A rabbi was threatened with what appeared to be a pistol at a synagogue in Miami, Beach, Florida on October 7th.
- A series of planned attacks on synagogues throughout the state of Alabama was thwarted by the FBI and local police on October 28th.
Faith-Based Buildings Are Under Threat

Places of worship are soft targets—open, accessible, and often lightly secured. With thousands of churches across Texas and Oklahoma, protecting every building is a challenge, but planning is the key.
Ask these three questions:
-
What are the odds of an attack?
-
Where are we most vulnerable?
-
How can we invest wisely to protect our congregation?
With the right plan, even limited budgets can make a big difference in safety and peace of mind.
Points of Vulnerability
Examining the incidents that have taken place over the last few months, reveal the following recurrent security gaps that were exploited by attackers:
- Open Access and Unsecured Entry Points: The welcoming, accessible nature churches present is what makes them a soft target. Many churches and synagogues have multiple open doors during services and minimal screening of entrants. Uncontrolled access allowed attackers to enter or attack from just outside the worship space with no checkpoint to pass. This lack of access control is a primary vulnerability.
- Lack of Physical barriers and fortifications: Many worship facilities lack physical security features that could delay or deter an attack. In the Minneapolis Catholic Church shooting the shooter shot through the stained-glass windows into the congregation. There was no bullet resistant glass or even a film to act as a secondary barrier. As side and rear exits were not monitored the shooter barricaded some of the exit doors to trap people inside. This highlights ho typical church/synagogue architecture (multiple exits, thin windows, no perimeter fencing) can be exploited unless reinforced.
- No On-Site Security or Delayed Response: In several incidents there were no security personnel or armed congregants to confront the attacker at the moment of attack. The initial defense fell entirely on unarmed worshipers or had to wait for the police. These delays in response cause higher casualties. Even a delay in response time of a few minutes is too long when an attacker can fire dozens of rounds in seconds.
- Inadequate Training and Drills: The lack of preparation among the staff and congregants for active threats was another vulnerability. At the Minneapolis Catholic School, the students had practiced “lockdown” drills in the classroom but not in the church. In many of the incidents the witnesses did not immediately recognize the sounds of gunshots. This confusion delayed protective action (people hesitated or remained standing while trying to make sense of the situation, increasing their exposure). Lack of regular active shooter training in sanctuaries and a general disbelief that “it could happen here” contributed to slower reactions.
- Lack of communication and Alarm Shortcomings: In several of the events effective emergency communications was lacking. Many churches do not have public address systems or panic buttons to instantly warn attendees of danger. In an attack every second counts and any confusion or delay in alerting the crowd can cost lives. Without a clear alarm or protocol people in many cases weren’t sure whether to hide or run away until they saw others do so.
- Limited Situational Awareness and Intelligence: In many of the incidents the attackers weren’t detected until they started shooting. In the case of the Minneapolis shooter no one noticed him lurking outside with a gun and barricading doors before the attack. Many congregations rely entirely on the police to alert them of threats and have little perimeter monitoring or security in place.
